Coaches Profiles

2008-2009 Season

Mites -- Kevin Powell - Kevin played his youth hockey with the Blackhawks in the glory days of NORCAL when players still used wooden sticks and long-hair and  8-track tapes were all the rage.  As an adult, he played for three seasons in Switzerland for club teams at a high amateur level. Kevin coached the Mite team during the 2007-8 season.

Squirt 1 Ian Macdonald -- Ian grew up in St. John’s, Newfoundland where he played youth hockey at a high level through Midgets. His Midget A team came one goal short of representing Newfoundland at the Canadian Nationals one season.

Squirt 2 Marty Ward -- Marty has been coaching youth hockey for the last 7 years, most recently as an assistant coach for Kevin's Powell's 2007-08 Blackhawks Mites team. When he's not coaching, you can still find him on the ice most weeks playing in the "largest adult hockey league in the nation". A native of Pittsburgh and the same age as Mario Lemieux, Marty knows who he'll be rooting for in the Stanley Cup Finals this year.

Peewee B Michael Meredith -- Michael enters third season with the SCVHA.  He had a successful season with the Peewee B team helping the kids earn a berth in the NorCal playoffs. He played his youth hockey in the Southeastern US, as well as in Pennsylvania and Dortmund, Germany.

Peewee A Ray Kellam -- Ray Kellam enters his fifth season with the Santa Clara Blackhawks with a track record of excellence. He has won NORCAL the last 3 consecutive teams he has coached (Squirt A 06, PeeWee A 07, & PeeWee 08) and is hungry for his first state title. Ray Kellam grew up playing hockey in NORCAL for the Belmont Rangers hockey program. He then progressed and played in the WSHL for the Utah Valley Golden Eagles and played 6 years for San Jose State University where he was team captain for his final 3 years and holds the all time record for games played. (145) Ray managed to wind up playing semi pro hockey in Spain for Madjahonda Hockey Club of Madrid while he was teaching English in 2006. Ray's passion is inspiring and his energy is contagious.  Assistant Coach(es): Adam Smith-Toomey, Vince Tripp.

Bantam AA Martin Denis -- Martin is well known around the Bay Area hockey community as one of the area's top coaches.  This will be his fifth year with the SCVHA.

Bantam 1 -- Norbert Tydingco  --  Norbert takes the reins of the Bantam A team for the 2008-9 season after assisting on the CAHA Champion Bantam A squad.  He has coached youth hockey in the Bay Area for over 10 years and has coached four state championships and three NorCal title teams; one Pacific District title and a National Championship with the 2006 Santa Clara Blackhawks Peewee AA team.  Assistant Coach(es):  Pete Godfrey

Bantam 2 -- Cameron Lewis  -- Cam grew up in the Chicago area playing hockey for a number of different travel clubs. As a Junior with the Chicago Minor Hawks his team won a National Championship in 1979. 15 years of coaching in California started with the Blackhawks in the early '90's. He coached at both A & B teams at the Peewee and Bantam levels winning several NORCAL championships. After a decade with the Hawks Cam, moved east to coach Peewee, Bantam and Midgets with the Stockton Colts including several trips to State Finals. Cam returned to the Hawks in 2007 to coach the Bantam A team. Sharing the bench with Pete Godfrey and Norbert Tydingco on the way to winning the 2008 State Championship has been the highlight of many, many trips to the rink.
 Assistant Coach(es):

Midget 16 -- Pete Godfrey -- Born and raised in Vancouver, B.C., Pete brings an impressive hockey resume to the coaching ranks of the SCVHA.  More recently, he assisted Cam Lewis on the 2008 CAHA champion Bantam A squad, and the 2006 USA Hockey Tier 2 semi-finalist Naperville Sabres.  As a player, he attended the BC Junior Olympic Program and also the US Junior Nationals Program.  He played at the NCAA D1 level with the University of Denver and also played for the Vancouver Bluehawks of the BCJHL Tier II Jr A.  Assistant Coach(es):  Norbert Tydingco.

Midget 18 Hal Nunn (ACE Coordinator and Director of Coaches) -- is in his 14th season as a Head Coach with the SCVHA.  Hal's streak of 3 straight Midget 18 A State Championships was stopped during the 2006-7 season, however, he is still one of the most respected coaches in the area and is back coaching the Midgets this season. In total, Hal’s Blackhawk teams have captured 4 CAHA Championships and 6 Norcal titles. His playing career included tending goal at Ridley College prep school in St. Catharine's, Ontario, as well as for the Big Red of Cornell University and a semi-pro team based in Ann Arbor, Michigan.   Assistant Coach(es):  Bill Fruen.
